I’ll start the New Year by helping you use one of the words above even more… the word ‘baru’!
The word ‘baru’ is an adjective that means new. As you can see above, ‘tahun baru’ means new year in which the noun is ‘tahun’ (year) and the adjective is ‘baru’ (new).
However, this word is not only used as an adjective in Indonesian. It can also be used as an adverb of time that means just recently.
When used as an adverb of time, it can be positioned at the beginning of a sentence or before the verb. But, it’s more often used before the verb than at the beginning and is rarely used at the end of a sentence.
Example:
I just recently had lunch.
I just recently woke up.
Other variations:
‘Baru’ can be combined with the verb ‘mau’ (to want) to mean about to
Saya baru mau telepon kamu.
I was about to call you.
‘Baru’ can be combined with the adverb ‘saja’ to further emphasise that it’s just recently.
Example:
I just recently had lunch.
I just recently woke up.
I was just about to call you.
